AEPC and its members have designed “Disha” and we are planning to launch the programme this month. It is a pan India programme for empowering garment units to create systems for human, social, economic and environmental sustainability. It has been developed in consultation with the ILO, the major brands that are sourcing from India, the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Textiles,” she informs.

Mr. Kompier suggests, “In India, hazardous labour is allowed from 14 years onwards, whereas the international standard is 18 years onwards. Changing to global standards would require a legislative amendment through parliamentary approval. In the meantime, the policy makers can revise the minimum age for various kinds of labour.”

“The ILO is working on a project called International Program to Eliminate Child Labor (IPEC), under which many projects are currently going on in various States of India to address the issue of child labour,” he informs.
