Question mark raised over role of trade unions
07
Jul '09
The simmering tensions between workers and garment manufacturers in the last few days is putting a big question mark on the role of the trade unions in the country, as looking at the situation, the unions do not seem to have any control over the workers, nor do they seem to have any line of communications with the owner/managers of the units.

Experts say that the role of the unions is to maintain industrial calm, in which they seem to have failed miserably and the presence of a multitude of trade unions is adding to the chaos, which number nearly 28 in this small country and also add by saying that they have failed to protect factory properties during these unrests.

Unions on the other hand say that if the garment factories were paying the minimum prescribed wages or paying salaries on time and also not cutting wages, the situation in the industrial sector would not have reached this stage.

But in these periods of unrest, it is the garment factories which face the brunt of vandalism and attacks on their personnel and this too at a time when most of these units are facing an acute crisis due to the global slowdown.
