The Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) has set a target to achieve US $3.3 billion in clothing exports in 2009 and hopes to reach $5 billion by the end of 2011.
This was disclosed by the Secretary General of JAAF, Mr Masakorala, who said the performance of the sector was impressive in the first quarter of 2009.
He said, the order position seems good for the summers as well as winters, bur SME's are facing tough times, but will be better off once the global economy improves.
He said, companies were dependent on the Government's Export Development Reward (EDR) scheme for their survival and called upon the Government to reduce taxes.
He also said that many from the industry were keen on moving to the Northern and Eastern provinces and many enquiries from companies had been received on the same.
He said, large size companies were slightly better off than their counterparts in SME's who could not compete on high quality products and delivery on time.
