Recently some major apparel manufacturers of Vietnam have signed export contracts, some of which will last up to late October and a few up to the year end, reported the Vietnam Textile and Garment Association (Vitas).

Also, it has been expected that apparel exports to Japan will soar, due to tariff exemption after signing of the Economic Partnership Agreement between Vietnam-Japan. Vietnam is on the 36th position in the world's ranking list in terms of added value, said a report.

The country is also witnessing demand for apparel from its new export markets such as Egypt, Turkey and Eastern Europe, besides Japan, but the apparel companies in the country are facing challenges such as labour shortage and competition from Philippines.

Philippines has been exempted from import tariffs, which will result in clothing manufactured in Vietnam to be priced higher than those shipped from Philippines. The apparel export turnover of Vietnam to EU for the previous fortnight was maintained at $50 million.

However, its market share in the first quarter of 2009 in its exports to EU was just 2.06 percent, against 44.1 percent of China, 11.65 percent of Turkey, while 8.56 percent and 8.49 percent was of Bangladesh and India respectively.
