Labour report reveals massive redundancy of workers

According to labour report released by Labor Ministry's Dispute Department, about 62 garment and shoe manufacturing units have been closed down and about 20 stopped their operation in 2006.
Due to this mass shut down, nearly 27,644 workers became jobless. Report also mentioned about 594 labor disputes during the period of 2004 to 2006, affecting total 557 factories.
Currently in Cambodia, there are 420 garment factories and 19 shoe factories with 287,005 workers.
In 2006, 103 garment strikes were witnessed compared to 67 such cases in 2005.
Due to these uncertainties, the minimum wage of average worker in garment industry has risen from US $45 to $50 from 2007.
