Leather gloves industry losing export business sharply

The state of West Bengal for long has been considered a fortress in manufacturing of leather gloves in the country, with a share of 95 percent of the market share of exports of leather gloves from India. But since the unfolding of the economic crisis, the troubles have begun for this once very vibrant and important segment of the leather industry.

Exports have declined by 30 percent month-o-month since the beginning of 2009 leading to tapering off, of new orders. Exports have fallen from Rs 990 million to Rs 654 million in February, which has now put a big question mark on the existence of over 400 leather glove manufacturing units, employing over 300,000 workers in the state.

To add to their woes, per unit price has also fallen substantially by at least 30-35 percent in the last few months as buyers look for more and more competitive rates. A few of the buyers are also discounting goods sent earlier and also reneging on already placed orders , by asking for more discounts.

All of these factors are putting a lot of pressure on the leather glove manufacturing units. A lot of companies have instead of laying–off workers have either reduced their working days or their daily working hours, in a bid to retain the trained workers, since they believe this downtrend may end soon and may need these workers as when orders start pouring in.
