TÜV SÜD South Asia, a leading provider of certification, testing, inspection and training services in South Asia, announced the inauguration of its testing laboratory for footwear and leather products in Ambur, Tamil Nadu on 24th July 2010.

The new laboratory supports leather manufacturers and exporters located in and around Ambur to meet international quality and safety requirements through faster delivery and cost efficiency.

The new TÜV SÜD Footwear and Leather testing laboratory is located at:
2nd Floor, Ambur Trade Centre,
M.C. Road, Ambur 635802 Tamil Nadu.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Niranjan Nadkarni, the Chief Executive Officer of TÜV SÜD South Asia said: “The opening of a new leather testing lab in Ambur is a landmark achievement for the company and a vital addition to our portfolio of operations. It will specifically bolster the development of the growing Ambur and surrounding cluster of leather and footwear manufacturers and exporters to ensure instant access and immediate delivery in the sector”.

The new laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and technology which provide comprehensive testing capabilities ranging from physical testing, performance and quality testing, and regulatory testing in the leather and footwear sector.

In addition to the mentioned testing services, the businessmen in the region will also have access to the various inspection and certification services for quality, safety and social compliance.

Facilities for conducting social compliance audits as well as training in BSCI, WRAP, SA 8000, Code-of-Conduct, and ETI as well as in REACH and CPSIA will now be made available from TÜV SÜD's Ambur facility. The newly introduced Footwear Mark for ensuring quality and safety is another value addition that would be offered from Ambur.

The Indian leather industry is targeting over USD 5 billion exports by end of 20101. In course of meeting targets, leather and footwear exporters encounter cost escalation in the form of testing and certification requirements that may disturb the focus on quality and safety.

However, the scenario is improving with training that is being imparted on quality and safety aspects in leather and footwear and with collection centres and laboratories being strategically located all over the country. TÜV SÜD South Asia has been helping exporters in various leather clusters in India realize the existing norms and compliance standards through regular trainings.

TÜV SÜD experts will also be providing information on leather and footwear testing, inspection and the certification process as well as a broad range of services at the Ambur Open, Ambur on July 24-25, 2010 (Ambur Trade Centre, Serv Sector, Hall 1). A facility tour of the Ambur facility can also be requested from the TÜV SÜD booth at the Ambur Open.
