Virbhadra Singh, Union Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) recently gave an assurance to the leather industry that the Ministry would introduce supportive measures which would make the sector globally more competitive.
While speaking after the inauguration of the 26th edition of Indian International Leather Fair 2011 held at the Chennai Trade Centre, he stated that the Central Government has recognized the leather sector as a target sector in the Foreign Trade Policy and have introduced various supportive measures for it.
The Minister said that, the MSME sector, which sourced 40 percent of the net exports, is seen to play a significant part in raising the Indian leather industry's contribution to the world trade and in creating more employment opportunities and raise the standard of living.
Uday Kumar Varma, Secretary, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises stressed on the need to focus on the country's leather industry which, while registering a turnover of seven billion dollar, provided employment to 2.5 million people, but still represented only three percent of the world trade, to lag far behind China, Italy and Hong Kong each representing 25, 15 and seven percent of the overall world trade.
He suggested that India's intrinsic strengths like holding 11 percent of the world's overall sheep and goat population, 25 percent of the cattle population, technical know-how and innovative abilities should be better focused on and utilized.
