L.L.Bean, a leading retailer of quality outdoor equipment and apparel, has signed on as a founding partner of the Dempsey Challenge presented by Amgen, a non-competitive fundraising event benefiting The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center. The event is scheduled for October 2 and 3 at Simard-Payne Police Memorial Park in Lewiston, Maine.

L.L.Bean will sponsor the 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer run/walk events scheduled for October 2 and will co-sponsor, with Poland Spring Water Company, the Dempsey Challenge recycling initiative; an effort to ensure refuse from the event is collected and recycled rather than going into the waste stream.

"L.L.Bean is a great fit for the Dempsey Challenge," said Wendy Tardif, Dempsey Challenge event Manager. "L.L.Bean is known nationally as a Maine company that gives back to its community, protects the environment and promotes outdoor recreation."

"This is an excellent opportunity for L.L.Bean to participate in this Maine showcase event," said Steve Fuller, L.L.Bean Chief Marketing Officer. "It's an honor for us to help build awareness for this worthy cause."

Following an inaugural event that last year attracted over 3,500 participants from 32 states and four countries, the Challenge has expanded this year to a two-day event offering a 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer run/walk on Saturday, Oct. 2 and cycling distances of 10, 25, 50 and 100 miles on Sunday, Oct. 3.

Returning events include a weekend-long, family friendly Festival in the Park. The Festival hosts a Health and Wellness Expo, KidZone, live entertainment, participant lobster bake and the Amgen Breakaway from Cancer Survivor Walk.

L.L.Bean, Inc. is a leading multi-channel merchant of quality outdoor gear and apparel. Founded in 1912 by Leon Leonwood Bean, the company began as a one-room operation selling a single product, the Maine Hunting Shoe. While its business has grown substantially, the company remains committed to the same honest principles upon which it was built – a focus on the customer, continuous product improvement and innovation, respect for people, preservation of the natural environment and a 100% satisfaction guarantee. The 220,000 sq. ft. Flagship campus of stores in Freeport, Maine is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and welcomes more than three million visitors each year.
