In view of a decline in cotton production in 2017-18 season, the Burkina Faso government has sanctioned CFA 14.614 billion ($26.91 million) to develop the country’s cotton sector. The amount will be used to “restore operators’ solvency and facilitate access to inputs for the 2018-19 campaign (crop sowing season)”, an official statement said.

“This special government support reflects the cotton sector’s strategic importance to the national economy and its contribution to the improvement of people’s living standards, especially in rural areas,” a West African news agency said quoting government statement.

In 2017-18 season, Burkina Faso’s cotton production declined to 553,000 tons from 683,000 ton in 2016-17. (RKS)
