Cool 'mekhela chador' in fabrics other than conventional silk are on display at an expo of handloom products going on in Guwahati, the capital of Assam. The six-day expo has been organized by the Guwahati Women Entrepreneurs' Association.
The fabrics on display are developed by aspiring designers who are not restraining themselves to the use of original silk and are now experimenting with different kinds of textiles for weaving the conventional mekhela chador.
These fabrics, apart from being light-weighted and soothing choice for summers, also lure customers with their stunning designs.
In recent years, when escalating prices have made it difficult for people to buy muga and paat apparels, the mekhela chador prepared from alternative fabrics are not only easy on pockets, but are also comfortable to wear.
Besides affordable cotton varieties, the fabric is now also woven with Belgium silk, masraise, where two strands of high quality yarns are intricately intermingled to produce a fine fabric and also in Kanjeevaram silk which comes in varieties like tissue, shimmer net, flocking, net and organza.
Mekhela chador prepared from these fabrics make a good choice as besides being reasonably priced they can also be donned on any occasion.
While adhering to the trend in the fashion industry, the designers are also slowly moving forward to designing apparels for different seasons.
Also while not adhering to conventional designs of the mekhela chador, the designers are now adopting designs from their other creations as well as from nature.
