Two varying figures with regards to production of cotton in the current season have been released by two different agencies.

According to National Bureau of Statistics, national cotton output is 6.6 million tons, but as per China Cotton Association, cotton output is 7.28 million tons in 2011-12.

China imported 3.365 million tons of cotton in 2011, representing an increase of 18.5 percent year on year.

Imports rose as, China issued abundant quota for cotton imports in calendar year 2011 and also due to the fact spread between domestic growth and foreign cotton widened.

Cotton acreage increased in 2011-12, due to the impact of generally higher level of cotton price in previous season. Weather conditions in most cotton producing areas were also suitable.
