Pakistan's textile & garment exports decline

Pakistan's textile and clothing exports registered a 7 percent year-on-year decline in terms of value and 20 percent in terms of quantity during the initial seven months of the current fiscal that began on July 1, 2011.

As per the official figures of textile exports up to January 31, 2012, Pakistan shipped textiles and clothing items worth US$ 6.936 billion during the review period, a US$ 500 million less than exports of US$ 7.436 billion achieved during the corresponding period of previous year.

According to the data, during January 2012 itself, Pakistan's textile and clothing exports plummeted by 17 percent to US$ 982.418 million from January 2011's US$ 1.180 billion.

The July-January period saw cotton yarn exports plummeting at a year-on-year rate of 22 percent from US$ 1.198 billion to US$ 935.8 million, bed-wear by 9 percent from US$ 1.161 billion to US$ 1.055 billion, art, silk and synthetic textiles by 8 percent from US$ 351.448 million to US$ 307.106 million, knitwear by 9 percent from US$ 1.307 billion to US$ 1.193 billion, towels by 7 percent from US$ 407 million to US$ 379.768 million and made up articles 7 percent from US$ 351.448 million to US$ 325.735 million.

However, the country managed to retain its cotton cloth exports at its last year's levels of US$ 1.334 billion.

Raw cotton exports grew at a year-on-year rate of 13 percent from US$ 183.365 million to US$ 208.068 million, during the period.
