Yarn exports register massive decline

The Egyptian spinning industry exports to both the US and EU markets have reached its lowest level ever, reports textile portal of Egypt, Egyptex.com.

The dilemma of Egyptian cotton prices and the unavailability of investments in the spinning sector in the last 20 years have affected the competitiveness of the Egyptian spinning sector industry.

The EU has always been the main market for Egyptian cotton yarn during the last 10 years, the exports to the EU has seen a huge slump in the export volume from more the 55,000 Tons in 1994 to only 15,000 in November 2005.

Egyptian cotton yarn exports to the US market have also decreased from 11,000 Tons in 2001 to only 3,300 Tons in November 2005.

The average yarn count exported to the EU market has also remained above count NE 32 which proves the demand of EU countries towards higher count yarns.

Meanwhile, the demand in the US on average yarn count exported has increased in the last 3 years from just above NE15 in 2002 to reach an average of NE25 in 2004.

The low count yarns are mainly used to manufacture home textile products such as towels and bed sheets, as well as, knitted products such t-shirts, polo shirts and underwear.

The medium and high count yarns are used to manufacture woven fine fabrics for shirts and trousers, as well as, high density fine fabric bed sheets.

Although, the exports of low count yarns which is up to count 20NE has represented 26% of all Egyptian cotton yarn exports in 2004, which is extensively higher in price than other low count yarns produced from other short staple or medium staple cotton.
