Mr Dayanidhi Maran, the newly appointed Minister of textiles has had an illustrious achievement in his short lived role as the Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology in the previous government.

Though he was the minister for a short period of just three years, he was able to turn the telecommunications and Information Technology sector upside down and started a revolution of sorts by reducing calling rates as well as internet access rates.

Mr Dayanidhi Maran was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004 and has now once again been elected in 2009. He was the youngest minister in the Union Cabinet of 2004. Among the many honours he has received are;

1)The GSM Association (GSMA), the global trade association representing more than 700 mobile operators, presented the Government Leadership Award 2007 to India for exceptional achievement in the field of mobile communications policy.
2)Received young global leader award at the maiden summit in Switzerland in June 2005.
3)Was awarded Sigaram-15 Achiever Award in the field of Politics by India Today Group on 25th August, 2005. The Award is given to those who have influenced politics and contributed their time for public service.

From amongst the many achievements he is credited for reducing the calling rates, whether STD or local, which lead to the spike in subscriber base across India. The number of cell phone users doubled within the first two years of his stewardship of the vital ministry.

He also reduced internet lease line charges to make the bandwidth available at competitive prices to facilitate growth in IT enabled services.

He was also instrumental in bringing in a lot of foreign direct investment in excess of around US $30 billion in manufacturing of chips, conductors and mobile handsets.

Leading global manufacturers like AMD, Ericson, Nokia, Flextronics and Motorola made or committed huge investments during his tenure

Now that Mr Maran has been selected as the Minister for Textiles and looking at his track record in the IT ministry, the textile sector has built a lot of hope, and looks upon the new textile minister to help the textile and apparel industry to survive through this crisis, since it is going through one of the worst phases of its existence.
