Riding on the back of growing demand for Christmas, handicraft exports from India soared by 19 percent to US $120 million, in July this year.

Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) data reveals that, handcraft export was recorded at $101 million during the corresponding period, last year. This rise in exports is mainly because of the Christmas orders flowing in from US and Europe, said EPCH Chairman, Raj Malhotra, further adding that, the trend usually perks up in June each year.

The Council foresees the exports going up by around 10 percent in 2010-11, over previous fiscal. Expectations of the exporters are now attached with the demand from key markets like US.

Meanwhile Malhotra even stated that, in this financial year, they propose to hike the occurrences of the international trade fairs that are organized in different parts of the world, from 33 to 47. Of the overall handicraft exports from the country, around 70 percent goes to US and EU markets.
