Punjab University recently concluded a six-day workshop called “Tana-Bana” intended at training fashion and lifestyle students on weaving and designing skills. The workshop was organized at University Institute of Fashion Technology at Punjab University, while the material required for the purpose was provided by the Ministry of Textiles' Weaver Service Centre, located at Panipat.
Two experts from the field imparted training to the students, right from the basics of practical weaving to creative weaving. Students were not only taught to operate the looms, but also given the knowledge regarding the effects produced by different types of weaves. They tried their hands on weaving with a variety of yarns and weaves to produce attractive fabric pieces.
Students, who participated in the workshop, were so motivated by it that, they are now thinking to apply the knowledge to prepare products for themselves. Students also felt that the theory was as interesting as the practical and that by attending this workshop they got all their doubts, related to weaving, cleared.
An employee from the Fashion Technology Department here stated that, incorporation of such workshops as part of the syllabus, along with the apparel and home furnishing industry, is likely to provide an opportunity to the students to work with weavers in the country and to develop exclusive lifestyle products.
