The government recently announced that four centres of excellence will be established shortly with an overall investment of Rs 1000 million for specialized textiles.

Textiles Secretary Rita Menon revealed at a FICCI function that four Centres of Excellence (CoE) for indutech, sports tech, composites and non-woven segments will be established with a financial assistance of Rs 250 million from the Government of India for each of these centres.

The main objective of these centres is to extend testing, research and standardization facilities at a single location for the producers of specialized textiles.

The Ministry of Textiles has urged the institutions like IIT and various research organizations to collaborate with an industry associate for the establishment of these facilities in the Centres of Excellence.

Following the inauguration of the Technical Textiles Technology Mission (TMTT), the Textiles Secretary added that the currently operating four Centres of Excellence on medi-tech, pro-tech, agro-tech and geo-tech textiles would also undergo upgradation with an investment of Rs 140 million for each of these centres. Previously, the government had extended Rs 440 million for setting up these centres.
