Cooperation in technical textiles is among the topics to be discussed at the forthcoming first-ever US-India Strategic and Commercial Dialogue (S&CD) to be held in Washington, D.C., on September 22, according to media reports.

As the most comprehensive mechanism for discussion and deliberation on the specifics of bilateral agenda of cooperation in different fields, S&CD will focus on “infrastructure, services, standards, business climate including ease of doing business, innovation, entrepreneurship and skill development and cooperation in technical textiles and guar gum.”

Minister of external affaris Sushma Swaraj, who will lead the Indian delegation to the S&CD, has already left for the US. The Indian side would include commerce and industry minister Nirmala Sitharaman and energy minister Piyush Goyal. The US team would include secretary of state John Kerry, secretary of commerce Penny Pritzker and secretary of energy Ernest Moniz.

India and US have set a target of increasing bilateral trade to $500 billion over the next few years.

A day prior to the S&CD, the US department of commerce will host its US-India CEO Forum—the primary mechanism for engaging the US and Indian private sectors and leveraging business leaders' recommendations to shape policymaking discussions. The private sector co-chairs will give a readout of their recommendations at the S&CD meeting on September 22.

The US CEOs selected for the first-ever US-India Forum this year include David Cote, chairman and CEO – Honeywell International, who is also Forum co-chair; Ellen Kullman, chair and CEO – DuPont; and Andrew Liveris, chairman and CEO – The Dow Chemical Company. (RKS)
