36th IIGF records 216% jump in business

Business worth $102 million was secured at the 36th India International Garment Fair (IIGF), which concluded on February 1, 2006, registering a jump of 216 percent up from $32.4 million achieved in the 34th IIGF, said Pritam Goel, Chairman IIGF.

Around 900 buyers and 350 buying agents participated in the IIGF Autumn -winter 2006 this year, with delegations from Italy, France, Australia, Spain, UK Turkey, Syria, US, Hong Kong, he informed.

Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) Chairman Vijay Agarwal stated that Indian exporter participants in the 36th IIGF have increased compared to 244 participants of last year.

The apparel export industry poised to be one of the biggest growth creators of the future, Mr Vijay Agarwal said.

With an investment of about $2.4 billion in the next few years, clothing exports from India can reach to $13 billion, exporting more than 150 crore pieces each year by 2010, against $6.2 billion, currently.

This has been possible due to the elimination of quota system in the EU and the US, infers a WTO report.

Global textile and apparel industry will possibly reach the value of $248 billion by 2008, with China and India predicted to derive the maximum mileage, said a recent DHL Mckinsey Apparel and Textile Report.

India has the capacity to enhance its share from present 4 percent to 6.5 percent to the tune of $16 billion by 2008, the report estimates.
