The Textiles Wearing Apparel and Footwear Trade Section of the Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise have been closely monitoring the situation with regards to the issue of re-introduction of quotas regarding textile products of Chinese origin.

The Trade Section is pleased to note that proposals by the EU to release goods currently kept out of circulation by the authorities, have been accepted.

The re-introduction of quotas has impacted in a very negative manner on many small operators who were unprepared for these restrictions.

It is hoped that a better system of allocation of import licences is established in a fairer manner rather that the current policy of “first-come, first-served basis' on certain categories of textiles.

Members are advised that they can check the availability of import quotas as well as obtain further detailed information on quota utilization and import monitoring procedures for textile product categories from China by logging on http://sigl.cec.eu.int

The Trade Section encourages all importers of textiles to register with the Trade Section so that they can be kept updated with developments. Traders can join the Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise and subsequently register with the Trade Section by contacting Mr. Edgar Chircop on telephone 21 233 873, fax 21 245 223 or e-mail ec@chamber.org.mt.
