Upper India Tannery on road to rapid growth

For thousands of years, leather has been one of the best companions of mankind providing warmth from the chilling winters. Leather also goes down in history for being inspiration to innumerable numbers of poetry, songs and stories. Now a days, leather is used almost everywhere, from clothing and fashion, to different types of furniture and leather products and plays an important role in our lives.
Upper India Tannery, an ISO 9001:2006 certified Kanpur based company, which was set up in 1946, started off as a small business of hides set up way back in 1918 and the vegetable tanned sole & harness leathers business was begun in January 1947. The company also has to its credit for developing, upper leathers for the first time from buffalo hides, while previously it was made from only cow hides.
The company sent its first export consignment to Iran in 1975 by exporting industrial leather belts and stood at number-1 position between 1975 and 1977 in exports of leather industrial belts from India to Iran. It stood at the same position in 1977-78 in exports of sole leather to Iran. In 1980, it developed for the first time in India, high abrasion and water resistant, low ash content sole leather from buffalo hides.
Once again it took honours for development and production for the first time in India of safety shoe leather according to DIN 4843 S3 & S4 for German safety shoe industry and for the boots used in the German cold mines. In 1990 the firm expanded its activity and started production of Industrial Tool Bags/Kits, Equestrian Articles and Footwear components including stitched Shoe / Boot Uppers.
Along the years the company has gone in for technological up-gradation of plant and machinery and has currently an annual production capacity of 1.2 million sq. metres of finished leathers and in the process has also diversified its product line by manufacturing furniture and automobile upholstery leathers. It has grown phenomenally since its inception in 1918 and is on the road to rapid expansion.
