Kao MC Toner enables high-speed printing & image quality

The Techno-Chemical Research Center of Kao Corporation has developed a new mechano-chemical toner, "MC Toner," with a small particle size. The new product, for color laser beam printers (LBPs), enables high-speed printing with high image quality and stable reproduction of color. It is currently being introduced to users and sold.
MC Toner has already won the 16th Technology Award of the Imaging Society of Japan. The product was highly rated by the judges for its new dispersion and particle-surface formulation technologies.
The research results were published in the Journal of Imaging Science and Technology (Vol. 51, No. 5, September/October 2007) and presented at the Imaging Conference Japan 2007 Fall Meeting, held in Kyoto on November 22, 2007. That event happened to be the 100th annual gathering of the Imaging Society of Japan.
The technology behind MC Toner prevents toner adhesion to printer parts during the image development process, even during high-speed printing. High image quality, in terms of color fidelity and density, can thus be sustained and kept stable. Such stability in the reproduction of color is in increasing demand as color LBPs become smaller and more popular.
Kao's Techno-Chemical Research Center develops toner (powdered ink) and its main ingredient, toner binder, for copiers and LBPs.
Toner particles comprise toner binder, wax, a charge control agent, a colorant (pigment, dye), and a surface treatment agent (such as silica). The binder, which occupies 80 to 95% of each particle, acts as a glue that melts during the fusing process and affixes the colorant to the paper.
Thus the characteristics of the toner binder greatly impact printing speed, image quality, and color-reproduction stability. Wax is compounded and dispersed in the binder to prevent toner adhesion to the fusing roll. Silica adds fluidity and electric chargeability.
