Representatives of several trade unions have jointly urged the government of Puducherry, a state in India, to support three textile mills – AFT Mills, Swadeshi Cotton Mills and Sri Bharathi Mills – all state government undertakings.

The leaders of trade unions said the three textile mills in the state are on the verge of collapse as successive governments have failed to take any concrete measures to strengthen these undertakings in spite of their repeated pleas.

Mr. VS Abishegam, Secretary of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC)-affiliated Pondicherry (Puducherry) Textile Labour Union (PTLU), said the management of the Rs. 5 billion AFT Mills is faltering in paying salaries to workers on the 10th day of every month.

He said the state government should implement steps to modernize and upgrade the mill so that the workers would not have to worry about the security of their jobs.

He urged the government to announce new policies in this respect during the coming budget session of the State Assembly.
