US Eileen Fisher and Swedish Filippa K are two womenswear brands that address circular fashion in a perfect manner, according to Camille Reed, founder-director of the Australian Circular Fashion Conference. The number of such brands is rising and brands like Nike, Adidas, Levi's, G-Star and Kathmandu feature new materials in their collections, she said.

Eileen Fisher has a take-back programme where customers can return garments for a discount off a new purchase. The second-hand items are assessed for repair, re-sale or recycling, Reed told Fibre2Fashion in an interview.

Eileen Fisher's unique recycling process began a number of years ago with the establishment of the Tiny Factory in Irvington, New York, where an elaborate system of organising, sorting, cataloguing and storing old apparel makes possible the production of new pieces that comprise the brand's upcycled Renew collection, she said.

Filippa K assesses the importance of a garment's lifecycle and has been working and collaborating with external stakeholders like recycling experts, academics, materials professionals to best understand why and what they are creating, what does its end-of-life look like and how can each item have meaning, Reed added.
