Bangladesh garment exports show slow growth

Exports of readymade garments from Bangladesh are growing but at a slow pace this fiscal, according to the latest government data.

In the eleven months to May 2015, garment exports from Bangladesh clocked $22.924 billion, registering an increase of 3.36 per cent over exports of $22.178 billion during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, Export Promotion Bureau data showed.

Category-wise, knitwear exports grew by 2.28 per cent to $11.167 billion during July-May 2014-15, as against exports of $10.919 billion made during the corresponding months of the previous fiscal, as per the data.

Likewise, exports of woven apparel increased by 4.43 per cent to $11.757 billion during the eleven-month period, compared to exports of $11.258 billion during the same period of 2013-14.

Woven and knitted apparel and clothing accessories’ exports together accounted for 81.45 per cent of $28.144 billion worth of total exports made by Bangladesh during the period under review. Garment exports grew at a slightly faster pace compared to the 2.8 per cent growth achieved by total Bangladeshi exports.

In fiscal year 2013-14, Bangladesh’s clothing exports surged by 13.83 per cent to $24.491 billion, compared to exports of $21.515 billion made in 2012-13.

For fiscal year 2014-15, Bangladesh has set an export target of $13.215 billion for knitwear and $13.681 billion for woven garments.

US, Germany and the UK are top markets for Bangladeshi garments. (RKS)
