Progress made by factories on compliance issues, in accordance with a tripartite MoU signed last May, was discussed at a review meeting of garment sector held on February 6, 2007. It was chaired by Finance and Commerce Advisor Mirza Azizul Islam.
Following an industrial unrest, the then Government, factory owners and labour leaders had inked the MoU to secure minimum wages for workers. After the meeting, Mirza informed reporters that buyers have expressed satisfaction.
During the meeting, BGMEA President S M Fazlul Hoque claimed that association has covered 60 percent of the compliance issues.
Garment entrepreneurs were instructed to consider the remaining issues soon. A committee was formed to plan a schedule for complying with these issues.
BGMEA demanded that labourers who were harming the apparel sector with help from external forces should be identified and punished.
