Cotton trouser exports decline

In comparison with imports, exports of cotton trousers for men decreased considerably in last year.

In 2006, exports of cotton trousers stood at 27,065 million pieces, a decline of 4.1 percent.

However, industry imported 700,237 million pieces of cotton trousers, an increase of whooping 98.3 percent.

Similar trend was witnessed in women's cotton trouser as exports reached 14.554 million at a decline of 3.5 percent and a surge of 26 percent was seen in imports at 4.643 million pieces.

Experts opine that curb in exports to US has triggered negative trend. They pointed out that last year's export of men's cotton trousers to US stood at 6,837,022 pieces, a decrease of 7.9 percent.

Moreover, exports of women's trousers to US reached 9.182 million pieces at a declining rate of 24 percent.

Even after such a reduction, market share of cotton trousers for men and women to US remained at 25.3 percent and 63 percent, respectively.

Most of the men's trousers were exported to Tanzania and Pakistan. During this period, exports to Pakistan stood at 925,802 pieces, a hike of 468 percent.

In imports, China topped the list of suppliers with market share of 43 percent, followed by Laos and Vietnam.
