The Board on Minimum Wages was not successful in arriving at a general agreement on whether to raise the wages for the four grades in the latest salary structure that has been recommended.

Apparel workers and their representatives proposed a set of suggestions as well as objections on the new salary structure. This was revealed by the Chairman of the Minimum Wage Board – Ikteder Ahmed.

The employees declined to accept the new salary structure and urged for the assessment of the salary of the fourth, fifth and sixth grades. According to them, the salary in these grades is less than that in the first grade.

According to him, the apparel owners presented 343 objections and suggestions whereas the workers and their representatives presented only 22 recommendations to the board. The employers also recommended that the board should decide the draft of the salary structure that was accepted on 29th July.

Ahmed further added that, the next meeting to confirm the draft will take place on 11th October.

The new salary structure will be implemented from 1st November. The minimum monthly wage has been fixed at Tk 3,000 at the time of entry.
