Inadequate cotton supply forces Mapeto to stop production

Mapeto David Whitehead and Sons Malawi (DWSM) Limited has sent its staff on leave till cotton is not available.
The scarcity of cotton has forced company to resort to local buyers like Great Lakes Cotton Limited for a month.
Mapeto DWSM General Manager Martin Mpata confirmed that company has no source of cotton in the country and the situation has been there for last two weeks.
Farouk Sacranie, Mapeto DWSM Managing Director said his company was in the process of importing cotton from abroad to keep itself in business.
Mpata said company has sought for government's intervention on the situation saying they have been in dialogue with Clark Cotton Limited.
Mapeto DWSM uses about 1,200 metric tons of cotton a year, an average of 100 metric tons per month.
Malawi produces an average of 46,000 metric tons of cotton every year. Local cotton is expected to be available from June.
