Maharashtra cotton growers approch NHRC to highlight their plight

Bankrupt cotton growers are taking extreme step of suicide due to hostile economic condition informed farm activist Kishor Tiwari in a press release today. This year, more than 70% cotton growers have opted for Bt. Cottonseed which is ten times costlier than regular cotton seed and as more than 90% farmers in this cotton belt are defaulter of banks as they are not getting crop loan from Govt. financial institutions and loan from private moneylenders .
Entire economy of the this region is controlled by this private moneylenders resulting more than 800 farmers suicides in last three years, Kishor Tiwari added.
This year, Maharashtra Govt. under taking Mahabeej Seed Development Corporation has officially marketed Monsanto company's Bt. cottonseed and apart from official sub-licensee of Monsanto, Mahyco, Raasi, Ankur, Bunny and more than 24 companies have sold bogus Bt. cotton seeds in market, while farmers were running behind Bt. cotton seed though it was more than Rs.3500 per kg. and Bt. cotton seed has created hostile economic condition of farmers resulting in suicides, Kishor Tiwari added.
Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti has demanded NHRC to direct Govt. of Mahrashtra to give the compensation to cotton growers who have lost huge money in Bt. cottonseed sowing in Vidarbha and fresh crop loan to all defaulter cotton growers who are in debt trap of private moneylenders.
