Mr Venkatesh, Director of Indus Fila Ltd, a leading textile manufacturer in India, is strongly against child labour and says, “It is against law of land and it is moral responsibility of the companies not to employ children. This will also help improve education, especially in lower-classes.”

He stresses, “We take all the possible measures to check this mistreatment. We collect information regarding the age and sex of the employee. We then make sure that basic amenities as well as healthy working conditions are provided, without discrimination.”

JC Penny, Country Head, India, Mr Adil Raza believes, “The child labour problem is not only in India but it is now in most of the underdeveloped countries of Asia where people are struggling to earn not only decent living but even basic necessities.”

Ms Mistry adds, “There are laws for textile industry stating that child labor should be prohibited. When GALU comes to know about any industry violating the rule, they file a report and commissioner takes the action. Survey statistics show that around thousands of children are currently employed, majorly in agriculture and textile industry. It is our moral responsibility to prohibit child labour and ensuring them good schooling and a healthy future.”

Mr Surinder Anand, Executive Secretary of Garments Exporters Association (GEA) claims, “Child labour is strictly prohibited in all our member garment exports units all over India. We keep regular checks and also conduct surprise inspections to guarantee that no laws are being violated.”
