Amazon India last week announced the launch of the 'Spotlight North East' storefront on its marketplace that is aimed at enhancing visibility of unique local products and showcase them to customers, who can find Nagaland’s Chakshesang shawls, Assam’s muga silk, weaves like the Moirang Phee from Manipur, varieties of teas and spices like the Mizo chili.
As part of the programme, Amazon has partnered with North Eastern Handlooms and Handicrafts Development Corporation (NEHHDC). The company had announced the launch of the 'Spotlight North East' programme in April this year during its Smbhav event.
The programme aims to bring 50,000 local artisans, weavers and small businesses from India’s North East region online by 2025, and boost exports of key commodities like tea, spices and honey from the region, a statement from the company said.
Amazon will also enable participation of artisans and weavers from the region in key sale events through the year and help generate demand for their products from customers across the country, it said.
The Spotlight North East programme has been designed to boost the local economy, create jobs and accelerate financial inclusion and empowerment of women across the eight states of the North East region of the country, it added.
The e-commerce company will also host training workshops to enable Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across the region. These workshops will include ideation sessions with leading designers from India on emerging trends to support artisans and weavers.
