Vietnam is a country with rich culture and tradition which makes it one of the potential markets for fashion industry. Unfortunately, the shortage of skilled workers and lack of technological upgradation are major drawbacks of the country’s fashion industry, according to fashion designers.

Speaking to fibre2fashion, Vietnamese fashion designer Dang Thi Minh Hanh said, “Vietnam is a country with longstanding culture, rich history and proud tradition and it has a great potential in the field of textiles and apparels, but the country lacks skilled workers."

"Though, there are many traditional craft villages and artisans, the country is facing shortage of professional fashion designers and marketing teams," she adds.

Echoing her Patis Tesoro, a Philippine fashion designer who was one of the participants in the Vietnam fashion week last month, says, Vietnam is a promising market for the fashion industry, but there is a shortage of skilled workers in the country.

Her suggestion: “Bringing in fashion designers and artists from other countries for sharing designs and ideas would fast track the Vietnamese fashion industry into the global fashion industry.”

Another designer who participated in last month’s fashion week in Vietnam, French fashion designer Françoise Hoffmann, says, “Vietnam fashion industry is focused on the preservation of traditional crafts such as weaving, use of bamboo, etc.”

“Vietnam fashion industry is mainly depending on human skills rather than technical equipments. Most of the fashion creations by the local designers in the country are a mix of traditional culture and contemporary designs,” she opines.
