The pale blue silk negligee, worn by actress Vivien Leigh in the cult Hollywood classic ‘Gone with the Wind’ is set to go under the hammer at an auction in New York.
Scheduled to take place sometime next month, the event, selling iconic pieces from the cinematic fashion history, will be organized by the London-based fine art auctioneer Bonhams.
The remarkable ankle-length accordion pleat outfit, sported by Leigh’s award winning onscreen character Scarlett O’Hara in the American historical romance film, features a hook-and-eye closure bodice detail with blue satin ribbons and angel sleeves.
Expected to fetch around £45,000, the dress also bears an original Selznick Int. Pictures Inc. black ink label inscribed with Name Scarlett / No. 108- W.W. 381.
Vivien Leigh wore the negligee underneath a fox fur trimmed blue velvet wrapper dress during the scene in which her daughter Bonnie Blue dies in a tragic horse riding accident.
The rare dress was gifted to a seamstress, who had worked in the 1939 film, on her wedding in 1940. The gown remained in her family until 1980s and was later sold to Shaw-Tumblin Collection, which is now putting it up for auction.
