Californian clothing retailer American Apparel has come out in support of the immigrant community of Los Angeles by launching a limited-edition collection of T-shirts which aims to collect funds for the immigrants.

According to a press statement, about 20 per cent proceeds from the sale of each shirt will go to California Community Foundation’s New Americans Opportunity Fund, which supports reform efforts by local non-profit organisations that helps immigrants eligible for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) programmes in LA County.

The Immigration Integration t-shirts will be available for purchase in five of the brand’s southern California-located stores including Westwood, Melrose, Echo Park, Little Tokyo and Factory Store as well as online from May 15, 2015. The noble immigrant support initiative will be carried on till December 31, 2015.

“For years, American Apparel has advocated for and worked passionately in support of immigration reforms. Justice and inclusion for our immigrant communities is a core principle for us and for our valued employees. We look forward to continuing our tradition of commitment to immigration reform by launching this partnership with the California Community Foundation to help New Americans integrate into the fibre of Los Angeles community,” said Paula Schneider, CEO of American Apparel, while talking about the latest effort.

“Non-profit organisations on the front lines of serving LA County’s immigrant community, by helping them fully integrate into the fabric of society, need the support of all L.A residents at this historic moment in the immigration movement. We’re pleased that American Apparel is showing leadership at this critical time for Los Angeles, and frankly, for the nation,” Efrain Escobedo, vice president civic engagement and public policy at the Californian foundation, reveals while speaking on the clothier’s participation in reform programme.

On November 20, 2014, President Obama announced administrative relief that could provide more than five million immigrants with protection from deportation and the ability to work legally in the US. (PB)
