Interest in local brands vital for progress

Citizens will have to overcome the perception that Malaysian brands are inferior to the imported brands.

In this uphill battle, only a few Malaysian brands have succeeded.

With seven brands under its belt, the Padini Group is the country's biggest fashion company.

Vincci, its shoes and accessories label, has become synonymous with footwear retail therapy for women.

Their designs are always up-to-date, offering customers a chance to be fashionable without subscribing to expensive labels.

Voir and Nose also offer trendy shoes and bags without breaking the bank.

In the field of fashion accessories, the fight is even stiffer since Malaysian brands need to fight with products sourced from Thailand and Indonesia that are much cheaper.

Salabianca and philosophy-Men are two Malaysian labels that strive to take Malaysian fashion to new heights.

Their shows are often carefully orchestrated and their window displays are always interesting, if not captivating.

Foreign players mainly dominate Malaysian retail scene and if the Malaysians do not become devoted towards their own industry and country, no one will approach to save them.
