China
In 2008, China supplied over 34 percent of apparel products and nearly 90 percent of footwear products purchased by U.S. consumers. Because of its large supplier base for the U.S. apparel and footwear industry, AAFA held an international product safety seminar in China in March 2009. With nearly 400 attendees over a two-city, two-day program, it was clear that this message was vitally important to the global supply chain of the U.S. apparel and footwear industry.

India
After great success with its program in China, AAFA held a second international installment of its product safety program in India in November 2009 – AAFA's first ever entry into India. India continues to grow as an important sector for apparel and footwear products for the global marketplace. During the two-city stops, nearly 250 attendees turned out to learn about U.S. product safety requirements.

2010
As 2010 draws near, AAFA is redoubling its product safety educational efforts because the CPSIA brings about another reduction in lead standards starting in February. Domestically, AAFA plans to hold several product safety events to accommodate producers no matter of their geographical location. AAFA is planning to return to China during the spring with an in-depth program relaying important technical information to those who are key suppliers to the U.S. apparel and footwear supply chain. Based on feedback from the Product Safety Council's network of stakeholders, additional international sites are also being discussed.

Cooperation with the CPSC
“Even before the implementation of the CPSIA, AAFA has maintained a solid working relationship with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC),” said AAFA Executive Vice President Stephen Lamar. “After the implementation of the CPSIA, AAFA has continued to engage the CPSC as we work to restore practicality and common sense to product safety regulations. We are thrilled that the CPSC has played such an integral part to our education efforts. We look forward to continuing our good work.”

During the course of the 2009 educational year, CPSC Commissioners Nancy Nord and Robert Adler, and several CPSC staff, have provided the U.S. apparel and footwear industry with valuable updates and perspective on the implementation product safety regulations.
