Power loom sector faces migration problem

Migration of skilled labourers to garment industry has concerned power loom industry of Chennimalai.

In Chennimalai, only traditional handloom weavers are engaged in the same sector and are earning reasonable income.

But young people trained in power loom production shifted to garment manufacturing units of Tirupur to earn more income than they are currently earning.

Due to strict enforcement of the Pollution Control Act, unstable prices of yarn and lack of orders from north India, skilled labourers of power loom industry are earning only Rs75 to Rs100 a day.

Taking advantage of the situation, garment exporters of Tirupur arranged vans and buses to take workers from Chennimalai to Tirupur.

With this migration, about 1,200 looms are lying idle and every day about Rs1.50 crore worth of textile production in handloom and power loom have been affected.
