According to Hong Kong Textiles Council (HKTC) Vice Chairman Willy Lin, wool's reputation as a versatile fibre for all season apparel is growing among Chinese and Hong Kong textile manufacturers.
Speaking to sheep and wool producers at a forum in Adelaide, Mr Lin informed that better technology and equipment in Chinese mills, together with improved easy care technology and lighter fabrics, meant wool was being used in blends where it had not previously been used.
Mr Lin is Managing Director of Milo's Knitwear International, which has factories in China, Hong Kong and Thailand, and produces 2.5 million garments each year.
He stated that he knows in his own company they are certainly using a lot more wool these days. Over 60 per cent of their knitwear is now blended with wool.
Mr Lin urged the Australian wool industry to ensure textile and garment manufacturers understood the high quality attributes of Australian Merino wool that allowed it to be used for quality apparel products. Manufacturers have to be taught about the new technology. Once manufacturers understand the benefits of Australian Merino wool, and the innovative new uses for wool and the fabrics and yarns that are now available, they can then push that to their customers – who are the retailers – and to the end consumer.
Mr Lin also informed producers at the forum that the abolition of all global textile and apparel quotas under the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in January this year had helped China's textile sector increase both efficiency and quality. Some of the best technology and equipment is now being allowed into China and as a result China is increasingly becoming known for high end fabrics and garments, those that predominantly use Australian Merino wool.
