Cotton production of the country was 1,350 million 480 lb bales in MY 2019-20, which dropped drastically by 78.89 per cent in MY 2020-21 to reach 285 million 480 lb bales due to cotton producer boycott. The boycott was implemented due to considerable reduction in farm gate price and subsidies on inputs.
Mali is expected to produce 1,290 million 480 lb bales in MY 2021-22, recording a surge of 352.63 per cent due to the withdrawal of the boycott.
The country does not import cotton as its domestic consumption is negligible due to low cotton processing capacity. Hence, it is focused on cotton production and exports.
Cotton exports of the country were 1,175 million 480 lb bales in MY 2019-20, which dropped by 25.87 per cent to 871 million 480 lb bales in MY 2020-21. Exports are likely to surge again by 45.24 per cent to 1,265 million 480 lb bales in MY 2021-22 due to expectations of high international demand and exportable supplies.
