China's CPL production capacity to surge by 2014

China's domestic production of caprolactam (CPL) is expected to rise substantially, with addition of new 970,000 tons per year (tpy) of production by 2014.
This will include a 200,000 tpy CPL plant of Baling Petrochemical, 200,000 tpy plant of Nanjing DSM, 100,000 tpy plant of Jiangsu JUNMA Corporation, 120,000 tpy plant of Shijiazhuang Chemical Fibre Ltd. company of Sinopec, and a 150,000 tpy plant to be set up by DuPont and BASF in Hainan.
Currently, China heavily relies on imports for its domestic CPL needs and it imports over 60 percent of its total consumption.
Over the next few years, China's production and sales of CPL are likely to witness a rapid growth.
By 2014, China's demand for CPL is likely to increase to 1.7 million tons. In comparison, its domestic production capacity is estimated to reach 1.5 million tons.
Hence, China's domestic supply of CPL is likely to fall short of its demand. Thus, there is still scope for further growth in CPL production in China.
