Textile quotas expiry bears little effect on exports growth - only 7% rise in Jan-Mar period

the government figures released state pakistan's textile exports during january-march 2005, rose steady at 7 percent reaching $2.16 billion as against $2.018 billion last year, same period.

the exports in rupee terms, during the said period 11 percent growth at rs 128 billion was registered as compared to rs 116 billion during january-march 2004.

this clearly means that the expiry of wto's textile quotas which came into effect from begining january, this year had negligible impact on the growth in exports of the products.

fabrics, bed wear and readymade garments were star category performers during the first quarter of 2005 with fabric exports having 23 percent weightage in textiles, grew by 10 percent to $500 million as against $453 million compared to same period last year. this meant 14 percent growth in rupee terms to reach rs 30 billion as against rs 26 billion, last year.

as for bed wear exports, having 18 percent weightage overall in exports, witnessed 8 percent increase in dollar terms and 11 percent in rupee terms to reach $381 million or rs 23 billion as against $353 million or rs 20 billion earlier.

readymade garments exports having 15 percent weightage registered 37 percent rise to $334 million, showing rupee term growth of 41 percent to rs 20 billion. but, the 15 percent weightage bearing knitwear export recorded minor slowdown of 4 percent in dollar terms and 1 percent in rupee terms to $332 million and rs 19 billion.
