Ministry of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia informed that Germany and Malaysia have enjoyed close and longstanding economic ties and the strong business partnership between Malaysia and Germany is reflected in the steady growth in bilateral trade.
Malaysia's total trade with Germany has been growing at an average of 8.3 per cent annually, over the last ten years. In 2005, total trade was valued at Euro6.3 billion (US$8 billion).
Exports amounted to Euro2.3 billion (US$3 billion), while imports were valued at Euro4 billion (US$5.1 billion). Over the last five years, Malaysia had registered trade deficits with Germany, which in 2005 was valued at Euro1.66 billion (US$2.12 billion).
Most of Malaysia's major exports to Germany continued to record growth in 2005. Manufactured goods dominated Malaysia's exports to Germany, accounting for 88.5 per cent of total exports.
Malaysia's major exports to Germany comprised: - E&E products, (61.3 per cent share of total exports); - natural rubber, (5.7 per cent share); - optical and scientific equipment, (4.5 per cent); - chemicals and chemical products, (4 per cent share); - machinery, appliances & parts, (3.9 per cent).
The continued expansion of Malaysia's exports was mainly due to the ability of Malaysian suppliers to respond to changes in the global demand for higher value-added products. Exports to Germany that registered the strongest growth in 2005 were:
