AWIS wool market drops 1.1% in Melbourne this week

The week finished on a positive note, given the strengthening US exchange rate; with good competition in the sale room yesterday. Merino fleece wool prices softened across all micron ranges on Tuesday, but lifted in the 21 to 23 micron range and held in the 24 to 26 micron range yesterday.
Skirtings were quoted as holding last week's prices on Tuesday, with better types picking up yesterday. Crossbreds finished the week down slightly. Oddments were mixed on Tuesday before generally easing on Wednesday.
Buyers for China were dominant, with evenly spread support from the topmakers and buyers for other countries.
Sales will be in recess in Melbourne, Sydney and Fremantle for the next two weeks. Sydney and Fremantle recommence in the week beginning 31 July and Melbourne resumes a week later.
The results of National Wool Production Forecasting Committee were announced earlier in the week. Production for 2005/06 was estimated to be 459 mkg, compared with 475 in 2004/05. Production for the new season is now forecast to be 456 mkg, subject to normal seasonal conditions for the remainder of the year.
