The textile dyeing and bleaching units at Tirupur, have been closed on court orders issued by Madras High Court due to lack of effluent treatment system.
Tirupur is Tamil Nadu's biggest textile export hub and order will affect 660 units as they failed to set required pollution control facilities.
A division bench comprising Justice M. Karpagavinayagam and Justice C. Nagappan ordered the closure of the dyeing units, on the basis of a case filed by The Noyyal River Ayacut Protection Council and several other environmental NGOs.
The court had ordered installation of effluent treatment plant last year as the units discharged effluents into rivers.
The units located about 600 km south of Chennai failed to pay up 25 percent advance for installation of reverse osmosis plant.
Only 30 units had paid the advance amount so far.
Now, the court has instructed defaulting units to produce proof of advance payments made, to issue further orders for their reopening.
