Silk brings a sense of sophistication, but possessing one is difficult because it's expensive.

To make silk popular, some value addition is done to the fabric. It is now blended with cotton, polyester, rayon and spandex for better drape, shape-retention and absorbency and it is made resistant to wrinkles, UV rays and bacteria.

Garments made of these blended silk are less expensive than pure silk.

An exhibition 'Silk Spectrum 2006' commenced in Bhubaneshwar yesterday to showcase these new varieties of silk.

The week-long exhibition displays a range of silk products and a variety of hand-woven garments from Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
