Uruguayan wool exports for the twelve months finishing December 2006 recorded a hefty increase year-on-year, according to statistics from the Uruguayan Wool Secretariat (SUL).
This rise is attributed mainly to a substantial increase in purchases by China followed by more moderate gains from Italy, Germany, Turkey and United Kingdom, the top five importing countries. China has strengthened its position as the biggest importer of Uruguayan wool, taking almost half of the total exports.
The steep rise in Uruguayan exports reflects a strong demand on the world market for medium micron wools. According to SUL a significant portion of the Uruguayan clip is concentrated in the range of 25 to 30 microns.
Looking at the wool exports by category: wool tops, which constitute the largest portion of Uruguayan exports fell slightly; the volume of greasy wool exports more than doubled; and exports of scoured wool rose very strongly in volume terms.
