IDB fund grants $10 mn for youth job training program

The Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) has approved a $10 million grant for a job training and placement program for disadvantaged youths in Latin America and the Caribbean, the Inter-American Development Bank announced.
The new program will build on the experience of the MIF-supported entra 21, an award-winning program run by the Baltimore, Md.-based International Youth Foundation (IYF).
Entra 21 recently won the United States Agency for International Development's “alliance of the year” prize for the outstanding effectiveness of its training and its creative partnerships with the private sector, NGOs and training centers in 18 countries in the region.
The new program will engage local employers in providing low-income youths access to quality jobs with prospects for professional development. The goal is to train 50,000 people between the ages of 16 and 29 through up to 27 locally executed projects.
The program will emphasize reaching a greater number of beneficiaries than the entra 21 projects and target youth from historically disadvantaged ethnic minorities or living in remote rural areas, as well as young people facing especially difficult circumstances, such disabilities, HIV, at risk of joining gangs or displaced by civil strife.
The MIF made a $10 million grant for entra 21 in 2001. IYF and its network of local partners raised more than $10 million in additional contributions to finance their projects. For the new program the foundation will seek to raise $20 million from other donors and partners
