Textile and garment industry absorbs nearly 20 million people in direct employment, meanwhile is related to the livelihood of 100 million farmers. It is the world's largest industry, which plays a decisive role in building a harmonious society and an important role in the global supply chain. So it has attracted wide attention from the international community.

According to the statistics recently released by the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2006, China's textile industry realized a total industrial output value reached 2.501689 trillion yuan, a surge of 21.24 percent. Total industrial sales volume amounted to 2.449776 trillion yuan, an increase of 21.6 percent. Entire profit accumulated at 88.294 billion yuan, soaring 27.96 percent over the previous year.

After nearly 30 years of development of garment industry, China has become the world's largest garment producer and consumer country. Now garment consumer market has been diversified with individual development trend.

It is worth mentioning that many of the national brands have gone out of the country with their own intellectual property right and are welcomed by consumers around the world.

In 2006, exports of textile industry reached US $147.085 billion, a rise of 25.14 percent over the previous year. China's total imports were $18.051 billion, a boost of 5.57 percent over 2005.

According to statistics, at present, the average technology investment rate of China's textile and apparel industry is only 0.3 percent, far below the average level of technology input in processing technology.
